12/03 The book's version of Ch 28 #34 is misleading.
The wording for this problem is different in the
book than it is on EGrade. The second question is
asked incorrectly in the book version (i.e. it is
asking a different question than is asked in
the EGrade version of this problem). The posted
answers are for the EGrade version of the problem,
with the book numbers. The question as it appears
in the book basically asks, "If the aliens are
unaware of special relativity, and if they simply
measure two speeds and subtract them according to
Galilean relativity, what will they calculate for..
      (c) and (d)?"; which is not a very interesting
question (the answers would be .2c and .194c).
The really misleading part about the book's version
is that it reads "At what velocity to the aliens
SEE.... move away from the cruiser." The aliens
can only measure the cruiser speed, the light speed,
and the ion speed, all relative to themselves. They
must calculate the speeds relative to the cruiser.
The EGrade version of this problem makes much more
sense. Sorry for the confusion. GBA

9/26 Because one of ASU's servers was down on Friday night, many
students had difficulty getting to their EGrade home page,
simply because they could not get to my page. For this reason,
I have made HW8 accessible to all students. You may enter your
answers and submit your work. HW8 will show up in your
gradebook as "Past Due", but your scores for HW8 will be given
full credit nonetheless. For future reference, it is a good idea
to write down the URL of your EGrade home page so that you can
get to that location even if one of ASU's servers is down. To
see the URL for your EGrade home page, put your cursor over the
link for your recitation on my EGrade info page. The correct URL
will appear on the border of your browser. HW8 will become
inaccessible again Tuesday 9/28 at 5 PM. GBA

9/20 A copy of the solutions to Test 1 is now

09/03 Due to scheduling conflicts, my TTH office hours
will move to F366, beginning next week. The MWF
office hours will remain in F306.

08/31 Because some students were still having difficulty
getting registered with EGrade, I have extended the
deadlines for HWs 1 and 2 by two days each. Also,
there are problems with the EGrade versions of two
      problems in HW2, CH18 #30 and CH18 #41. Please skip
these two problems for the time being (i.e. only do
the book versions for now). Once the EGrade versions
of these problems are correct, I will give you an
opportunity to submit these two problems. Thanks. GBA

08/27 The problem for returning EGrade students should
now be fixed. You should now be able to log in
to this year's class with the same username and
password that you used last spring.

08/26 We are having a problem with the accounts of some
students who purchased EGrade in Spring 2004.
Hopefully, this problem will be resolved tomorrow.
If you are a returning EGrade student, and if you
are having difficulty registering, please be patient.
For the time being, just work the book versions of
the problems, and I will make sure that there is
sufficient time to submit the answers for the EGrade
versions once this problem is resolved. Thanks. GBA

08/24 If the bookstore is running short of those EGrade
packets which are packaged separately from the book,
you can buy an EGrade code online (downloadable
direct from the publisher). See the bottom of our
      EGrade Information Page.
