NOTE: In reporting the averages from the test we drop
the lowest scores. This is because 25% (1 out
of 4) of all scores will eventually be dropped.
In comparing your average with the class average
you need to compare with an average which is
representative of the final average. Dropping
the lowest scores before reporting the average
is one way of ESTIMATING the effect of the final
drops. These posted test averages are not used
in any way in computing the final overall class
       average. GBA

Overall Pre-Exam Average

115 students have taken three or more tests and have more
than 600 HW points. For these 115 students, the
     overall averages are

                     % points

      test 63.12 37.87

                       or 68.3% <-- Predicted Pre-Exam Average

Assuming an average of 65 on the final, or 13 out of
20 points, results in a predicted overall average of 67.6.
With this predicted average a POSSIBLE breakdown of grades
would be:

                52.4 - 62.3 D
                62.4 - 72.8 C
                72.9 - 82.8 B

You should figure your pre-exam total then figure how many
exam points (out of 20 possible) you need to get the grade
that you want. Remember that the true final grade scale
ultimately depends on overall class exam performance. Also,
the final grade scale will be selected so as to find gaps
in the final grade distribution.

FINAL EXAM

116 students took the final exam. For those 116
students the final exam average is

            26.64 out of 40, or 66.60%.

FINAL AVERAGE

115 students took 3 or more tests plus the final exam
and had more than 600 HW points

for those 115 here are the averages (Please note that
the TA's made some errors in figuring the Pre-Exam
averages, which were corrected here; the overall
effect of the errors was minimal):

                     % points

      test 62.87 37.72

overall 68.1 (out of 100) <-- Final Average

This was 0.5 points higher than the overall average
PREDICTED before the final exam; the difference was
mainly due to the higher-than-predicted final exam
average. The final grade scale was selected so as
to find gaps in the grade distribution. Here is
that final scale:

        49.1 - 62.0 D
        62.1 - 73.8 C (above 69.7 is C+)
        73.9 - 83.4 B (below 75.6 is B-, above 80.5 is B+)
        83.5 and up A (below 86.3 is A-, above 95 is A+)

Letter grades were assigned strictly according to this
scale. The highest E is 46.4, the lowest D is 49.1; the
highest D is 60.4, the lowest C is 62.1; the highest C
is 73.2, the lowest B is 73.9; the highest B is 82.4,
and the lowest A is 83.5. The smallest gap between
levels is 0.7 points between C to B.
