and online HW system.

THE LOOSELEAF EDITION OF OUR TEXTBOOK IS STRONGLY
RECOMMENDED. Please see the instructions in the
following paragraph. Thanks. GBA

For our active-learning class, you will be required to
read our textbook. THERE ARE NO LECTURES, so the
textbook will be your primary source of factual
information. For our class, I strongly recommend
that you purchase the Looseleaf Edition (or "unbound
edition") of Young and Freedman 15th edition; this
is INSTEAD of any possible hardbound edition of the
text. THE RECOMMENDED LOOSELEAF EDITION CANNOT BE
PURCHASED FROM THE BOOKSTORE. Instead, begin by
going to our class Canvas page and follow the
instructions on our class webpage to establish, and
pay for, your Mastering Physics account for our
class. BE SURE TO SELECT THE MP ACCOUNT WITH ETEXT.
Once you are inside your MP account for our class,
then select "eText" from the menu on the left-hand
border. The resulting eText page then gives you the
opportunity to purchase the unbound edition for
$45 with free ground shipping. The free shipping
may take two weeks, so purchase your looseleaf
edition as soon as possible. Until it arrives, just
read from the etext provided by MP. Once your
looseleaf edition arrives, I suggest putting it into
three separate 3-ring binders, one for Mechanics
(121), one for E&M (131), and one for Thermodynamics
and Modern Physics. I also suggest that you get
a small 3-ring binder, suitable for one chapter at
a time. Bring this small binder with you to class,
and make notes in the margins when questions that
you have about the reading are answered during our
class discussions.  Thanks much.  GBA

Note: when you register for your Mastering Physics
account, be sure to select Mastering Physics with
Etext; you will then get a copy of the etext for the
15th edition of Young and Freedman. If you are
content with reading on a screen only, then the
electronic version of the text is sufficient for our
class. However, as noted in the paragraph above, I
strongly recommend the looseleaf hard-copy text in
which you can make notes in the margins; you can
then keep this copy as a physics reference book.

The textbook is University Physics, by Young and Freedman,
15th Edition, (Addison-Wesley, 2020.) If you wish to have
a hardbound edition of the book, then you may use either

volume 1 only (for PHY121 only),

the full edition (for PHY121 and PHY131), or

Y&F with Modern Physics (for PHY 121, 131, and 241),

however your 241 instructor may choose not to use Y&F.

Reading assignments are keyed to this textbook.
At the bookstore, the textbook should come packaged with
Mastering Physics. Mastering Physics is required.
If you buy a used textbook, then you must buy Mastering
Physics separately at the bookstore or online through our
class Canvas page; this is the only online place to pay
for a Mastering Physics account for our class.
