NOTE: In reporting the averages from the test we drop
the lowest scores. This is because 20% (1 out
of 5) of all scores will eventually be dropped.
In comparing your average with the class average
you need to compare with an average which is
representative of the final average. Dropping
the lowest scores before reporting the average
is one way of estimating the effect of the
       final drops. GBA

1st test

       139 students took test 1

       29 made below 46

       110 scored 46 or more

for those 110 the average was 74.4

       test 1 grades

2nd test

       125 students took test 2

        25 made below 39

       100 scored 39 or more

for those 100 the average was 58.3

       test 2 grades

3rd test

       119 students took test 3

        23 made below 52

        96 scored 52 or more

for those 96 the average was 70.2

       test 3 grades

4th test

       108 students took test 4

        22 made below 51

        86 scored 51 or more

for those 86 the average was 73.5

       test 4 grades

5th test

        104 students took test 5

        22 made below 32

        88 scored 32 or more

for those 88 the average was 54.4

       test 5 grades

Pre-exam average

107 students have taken 4 or more tests

for those 107 here are the averages:

HW 7.4 (out of 10 possible, 2 HW turn-ins remaining)
(last week's and the final turn-in, at the exam)
quiz 8.3 (out of 10 possible, best 10 of 13 quizzes)

test 67.8 (out of 100 possible, best 4 of 5 tests)
(multiply by 0.6 to get number of points)

overall 56.4 (out of 80 possible pre-exam points)

Preliminary pre-exam average is thus 70.5%

Figuring 0.5 an extra HW point for the remaining turn-ins,
and estimating an average score of 14.0 (70%) on the final
exam results in a predicted final average of 70.9 points. With
this final average, a possible final grade scale would be

                  54.9 - 65.4 D
                  65.4 - 76.4 C
                  76.4 - 86.9 B

The true final grade scale depends on overall class exam
performance.

Final Average

101 students took 4 or more tests plus the final exam

for those 101 here are the averages:

         HW 7.7 (out of 10)
         quiz 8.6 (out of 10)
test 67.3 (multiply by 0.6 to get #points)

         exam 24.6 (out of 40 - divide by 2 to get #points)

      overall 69.0 (out of 100)

The final grade scale was selected so as to find gaps
in the grade distribution. Here is that final scale:

                    52.0 - 62.1 D
                    62.2 - 73.0 C
                    73.1 - 84.0 B

Letter grades were assigned strictly according to this
scale. The highest E is 50.2, the lowest D is 52.8; the
highest D is 61.5, the lowest C is 62.2; the highest C
is 72.4, the lowest B is 73.1; the highest B is 83.6,
and the lowest A is 84.3. The smallest gap between
levels is 0.7 points between each of D to C, C to B, and
B to A.

If you find a significant error the best time to see me is
Friday (call beforehand to make sure that I am here) or Monday
between 10:30 and 11:30 AM. After that time any change of grade
requires a change of grade form. For information on how to
