PROBLEMS FROM SERWAY - CHAPTERS 4 AND 5

        CHAPTER 4

        34. A 5 kg bucket of water is raised from a well by a rope
attached to the bucket. If the upward acceleration of
the bucket is 3 m/s^2, find the force exerted on the
             bucket by the rope.

        CHAPTER 5

(NOTE: The problem numbers 36 and 38 which appear on the
printed syllabus are a misprint. The correct numbers
               are 46 and 48.)

        46. A ball is suspended from the ceiling of a moving car
by a string 25 cm in length. An observer in the car
notes that the ball deflects 6 cm from the vertical
toward the rear of the car. What is the acceleration
            of the car?

        48. A 5 kg mass is sitting within a railroad boxcar on a
frictionless, horizontal surface. The mass is attached
to the front wall of the boxcar by a horizontal rope
containing a spring scale. At a certain time, when the
boxcar is in motion, the spring scale reads 18 N.

            (a) If the spring scale reads zero when the boxcar is
at rest, determine the acceleration of the boxcar when
            the scale reads 18 N.

            (b) What will the spring scale read if the boxcar moves
            with constant velocity?
