NOTE: In reporting the averages from the test we drop
the lowest scores. This is because 20% (1 out
of 5) of all scores will eventually be dropped.
In comparing your average with the class average
you need to compare with an average which is
representative of the final average. Dropping
the lowest scores before reporting the average
is one way of ESTIMATING the effect of the
final drops. These averages are not used in
any way in computing the final overall class
       average. GBA

Overall Pre-Exam Average

47 students have taken four or more tests and have more
than 600 HW points. For these 47 students, the
     overall averages are

                       % points

                                                     pre-exam points

                or 65.4% <-- Pre-Exam Average

Assuming an average of 65 on the final, or 13 out of
20 points, results in a predicted overall average of 65.3.
With this predicted average a possible breakdown of grades
would be:

                48.5 - 59.4 D
                59.5 - 71.4 C
                71.5 - 82.5 B

You should figure your pre-exam total then figure how many
exam points (out of 20 possible) you need to get the grade
that you want. DISCLAIMER: THIS PREDICTED FINAL GRADE
SCALE IS ONLY AN ESTIMATE. The true final grade scale
ultimately depends on overall class exam performance. Also,
the final grade scale will be selected so as to find gaps
in the final grade distribution.

FINAL EXAM

Of the 47 students who had taken four or more tests and
had more than 600 HW points, 46 took the final exam.
For those 46 students the final exam average is

            24.8 out of 40, or 62.0%.

In selecting the final grade scale I was guided
less by the predicted scale above (although I did not
want the final scale to be comparatively higher) and more
by the distinct gaps in the final grade distribution as
presented below. In particular, my choice was influenced
by the large grouping of scores at about 80; I did not
feel it was appropriate to give some of those students
A's and others B's. Once the choice was made to give
those students either A's or A-'s, the rest of the
selection process was guided naturally by the large gaps
in the remaining distribution. Here is the final grade
scale which results:

      45.4 - 55.7 D
      55.8 - 66.3 C (above 62 is C+)
      66.4 - 76.7 B (below 67.5 is B-, above 71 is B+)
      above 76.7 A (below 81 is A-, above 87 is A+)

Letter grades were assigned strictly according to this
scale. The highest E is 37.8, the lowest D is 45.5; the
highest D is 52.7, the lowest C is 55.8; the highest C
is 64.0, the lowest B is 66.4; the highest B is 72.1,
and the lowest A is 76.8. The smallest gap between
levels is 2.4 points between C to B.
