101 Quiz Policies Quizzes are at WebAssign. On a week in which a Quiz is given (see the Quiz schedule), the Quiz is available at WebAssign from Noon on TUE until Midnight on WED. For Quizzes, there is a 20-minute time limit; once you open the Quiz at WebAssign, you have 20 minutes to write up your solution, photograph your work, create a pdf file from your photograph, and submit your pdf file at WebAssign. Before starting a Quiz, you must be sure that your internet connection is stable. If you are not able to submit a Quiz within 20 minutes after opening that Quiz, then that Quiz will have to be one of your two dropped Quizzes for our Spring 2023 semester. Starting at midnight on WED, there is a 20-minute grace period after which no submissions are possible. To repeat, at 12:20 AM THU, it will become impossible to make a pdf submission for that week's Quiz. If, FOR ANY REASON, you have not submitted your Quiz by this time, then that Quiz will have to be one of your two dropped Quizzes for our Spring 2023 semester. Please do not send an email to your instructor or your TA asking for an exception to this policy (be sure to do the Sample Quiz for Practice at WebAssign before trying a Quiz). At WebAssign, you will find a Sample Quiz for Practice Assignment which you can use to practice making a pdf upload that is appropriate for WebAssign. Because there is a 20-minute time limit for an actual Quiz, it is VERY IMPORTANT FOR YOU TO COMPLETE THAT PRACTICE ASSIGNMENT. NOTE: Names of pdf submissions at WebAssign may not contain spaces, commas, etc. Always make a simple filename for your WebAssign pdf submission (such as "quiz1", or "quiz2", for example, for the letters preceding the ".pdf" file suffix). After submitting, always double-check that you have submitted a readable PDF FILE. Please don't risk getting a zero by trying to make your pdf submission in the final minute of the 20-minute quiz period. If you do not successfully complete the pdf upload, then the Quiz in question will have to be one of your two dropped Quizzes for the semester. In particular, if HEIC files are submitted at WebAssign, they WILL NOT BE GRADED. Thanks, GBA. At WebAssign, the size of pdf submission files must be less than 3.0 megabytes. You should be able to write up a Quiz solution on one side of a single 8.5 by 11 inch piece of paper. A photograph of such a solution, converted to pdf, should easily be less than 3.0 MB in size. Be sure to complete the Sample Quiz for Practice at WebAssign before starting your first Quiz in order to get practice in submitting pdf files at WebAssign. One final note about submitting Quizzes at WebAssign. After uploading a file, you must always hit the Submit button. If you fail to hit the Submit button, your file will not be seen by the grader, and you will receive no credit for your intended submission. If you decide to upload another file, you can always hit the submit button a second time. There are a total of seven quizzes during the semester. Quiz topics are given in the schedule. You will need a small hand calculator for the quizzes. In Spring 2023, at least Quizzes 1, 3, and 6, will be just for practice (so making a submission at WebAssign is not required for those three). For the practice Quizzes, just bring your written solution to recitation and grade yourself when your TA presents the solution. The highest two non-practice Quiz scores will be counted in your final average. If you take all four non-practice Quizzes, your two lowest quiz scores will automatically be dropped at the end of the semester. If you fail to submit a Quiz, FOR ANY REASON, that Quiz will be one of your drops. NOTE: you might also like to read the Internet Disruption Policy for our Spring 2023 course. Your quiz average will account for 5% of your final overall grade for our course. QUIZ GRADING APPEALS Quizzes will be graded by a grader. If you submitted a paper quiz (there are none this semester), then your graded quiz will be returned by your TA at a later recitation. If you submitted a pdf Quiz at WebAssign, then your graded Quiz will appear at WebAssign approximately 1-2 weeks after you have made your pdf submission for that quiz. If you wish to appeal the grading of one of your quizzes, you must follow these procedures: (1) Please DO NOT try to discuss the grading of the quiz with your TA immediately after recitation. Your quiz was not graded by your TA. (2) If you think you deserve more points on a graded quiz, submit an appeal IN WRITING, following the instructions in Section (3) below. Explain carefully exactly why you deserve more points, and ask for as many points as you think your answer deserves. (3) Send your written appeal, in PDF form, to Dr. Adams by email within two school days of receiving your graded quiz either from your TA, or at WebAssign. (4) I will pass your appeal to the grader, who must give you a written reply, which will be emailed to you either through Dr. Adams or through your recitation TA. If you are not satisfied with the grader's response to your appeal, then you may ask Dr. Adams to consider your appeal; in such cases I reserve the right to regrade your entire quiz.
