NOTE: In reporting the averages from the test we drop
the lowest scores. This is because 25% (2 out
of 8) of all scores will eventually be dropped.
In comparing your average with the class average
you need to compare with an average which is
representative of the final average. Dropping
the lowest scores before reporting the average
is one way of ESTIMATING the effect of the
final drops. These posted test averages are not
used in any way in computing the final overall
class average. GBA

Overall averages
79 students took three or more tests (including
test four) and had more than 90 HW points
for these 79 students
the final HW average is 8.43 points
the final Quiz average is 8.15 points
the final test average is 61.56% (multiply by .8 to
get number of points)
and the overall average is 65.8 points
Note that the overall average includes all students who took
three or more tests (including test four) and had more than
90 HW points. The test average is computed by dropping the
lowest MC and the lowest Problems section for each student,
computing each student's average, and then computing a global
average for all 79 students. With this final average, the
final grade scale is
45.5 - 55.2 D
55.3 - 69.8 C
69.9 - 79.9 B
with below 45.5 as E and above 79.9 as A. The final scale was
selected so as to find gaps in the distribution. With the scale
as given above the highest E is 42.5, the lowest D is 47.5, the
the highest D is 54.1, the lowest C is 55.3, the highest C is
68.7, the lowest B is 69.9, the highest B is 78.3, and the lowest
A is 79.9. The smallest gap is 1.2 points between D and C and
between C and B. Grades were assigned strictly based on this scale.
