NOTE: In reporting the averages from the test we drop the lowest scores. This is because 25% (2 out of 8) of all scores will eventually be dropped. In comparing your average with the class average you need to compare with an average which is representative of the final average. Dropping the lowest scores before reporting the average is one way of ESTIMATING the effect of the final drops. These posted averages are not used in any way in calculating the final class average. GBA 1st test 93 students took test 1 Multiple Choice 78 students earned 25 or more points for those 78 the average was 38.1 (63.5%) Problems 72 students earned 24 or more points for those 72 the average was 36.7 (56.5%) multiple choice grades problem grades 2nd test 90 students took test 2 Multiple Choice 66 students earned 30 or more points for those 66 the average was 40.8 (68.0%) Problems 67 students earned 28 or more points for those 67 the average was 43.3 (66.6%) multiple choice grades problem grades 3rd test 89 students took test 3 Multiple Choice 72 students earned 25 or more points for those 72 the average was 36.9 (61.5%) Problems 67 students earned 24 or more points for those 67 the average was 38.1 (58.6%) multiple choice grades problem grades 4th test 87 students took test 4 Multiple Choice 74 students earned 25 or more points for those 74 the average was 38.9 (64.8%) Problems 51 students earned 21 or more points for those 51 the average was 34.7 (53.4%) multiple choice grades problem grades Overall averages 81 students took three or more tests and had at least 90 homework points for these 81 students the final HW average is 7.9 points the final quiz average is 7.5 points the final test average is 60.7% (48.6 points) and the overall average is 63.9 points Note that the overall average includes all students who took three or more tests (including the fourth test) and who had at least 90 HW points. The test average is computed by dropping the lowest MC section and the lowest problem section for each student (except one section of test 4 must be kept), computing each student's average, and then computing a global average for all 87 students. With this final average, the final grade scale is 44.5 - 55.9 D 56.0 - 66.3 C 66.4 - 76.9 B with below 44.5 as E and above 76.9 as A. The final scale was selected so as to find gaps in the distribution. With the scale as given above the highest E is 42.5, the lowest D is 44.5, the the highest D is 55.1, the lowest C is 56.0, the highest C is 65.4, the lowest B is 66.4, the highest B is 75.9, and the lowest A is 77.0. The smallest gap is 0.9 points between D and C. Grades were assigned strictly based on this scale. Be sure to check your TA's computation of your final grade.
