NOTE: In reporting the averages from the test we drop
the lowest scores. This is because 25% (2 out
of 8) of all scores will eventually be dropped.
In comparing your average with the class average
you need to compare with an average which is
representative of the final average. Dropping
the lowest scores before reporting the average
is one way of ESTIMATING the effect of the
final drops. These posted averages are not
used in any way in calculating the final class
average. GBA

Overall averages
41 students took three or more tests (including
the fourth test) and had at least 100 homework
points
for these 41 students
the final PRS average is 4.35 points (out of 5)
the final HW average is 7.02 points (out of 8)
the final quiz average is 6.09 points (out of 7)
the final test average is 49.70 points (62.13% of 80)
the overall average is 67.2 points
Note that the overall average includes all students who took
three or more tests (including the fourth test) and who had
at least 100 HW points. The test average is computed by dropping
the lowest MC section and the lowest problem section for each
student (except one section of test 4 must be kept), computing
each student's average, and then computing a global average
for all 41 students. We figured the final grade scale based on
a weighted average from the Summer 2002-2007 classes; this
weighted average was 63.5 and was taken as the approximate
middle C for the following grade scale:
44.3 - 54.5 D
54.6 - 66.9 C (above 64.6 is C+)
67.0 - 80.5 B (below 73.0 is B-, above 78.2 is B+)
80.6 and up A (below 83.9 is A-, above 91.9 is A+)
with below 44.3 as E. The final scale was selected so as to
find gaps in this year's distribution. With the scale as given
above the highest E is 41.8, the lowest D is 44.3, the the
highest D is 52.6, the lowest C is 54.6, the highest C is 65.4,
the lowest B is 67.0, the highest B is 78.2, and the lowest A
is 80.6. The smallest gap is 1.6 points between C and B.
Grades were assigned strictly based on this scale.
