NOTE: In reporting the averages from the test we drop the lowest scores. This is because 25% (2 out of 8) of all scores will eventually be dropped. In comparing your average with the class average you need to compare with an average which is representative of the final average. Dropping the lowest scores before reporting the average is one way of ESTIMATING the effect of the final drops. These posted averages are not used in any way in calculating the final class average. GBA 1st test 51 students took test 1 Multiple Choice 38 students earned 30 or more points for those 38 the average was 42.4 (70.7%) Problems 33 students earned 26 or more points for those 33 the average was 38.2 (58.8%) multiple choice grades problem grades 2nd test 49 students took test 2 Multiple Choice 33 students earned 25 or more points for those 33 the average was 32.9 (54.8%) Problems 33 students earned 17 or more points for those 31 the average was 33.4 (51.4%) multiple choice grades problem grades 3rd test 48 students took test 3 Multiple Choice 35 students earned 25 or more points for those 35 the average was 34.2 (57.1%) Problems 35 students earned 20 or more points for those 35 the average was 32.6 (50.2%) multiple choice grades problem grades 4th test 45 students took test 4 MC 40 students took test 4 Problems Multiple Choice 23 students earned 20 or more points for those 23 the average was 28.0 (46.7%) Problems 30 students earned 20 or more points for those 30 the average was 35.8 (55.1%) multiple choice grades problem grades Overall averages 45 students took three or more tests (including the fourth test) and had at least 106 homework points for these 45 students the final TP average is 4.16 points (83.3% of 5 points) the final HW average is 10.32 points (79.4% of 13 points) the final quiz average is 5.82 points (83.1% of 7 points) the final test average is 38.07 points (50.76% of 75 points) the overall average is 58.4 points Note that the overall average includes all students who took three or more tests (including the fourth test) and who had at least 106 HW points. The test average is computed by dropping the lowest MC section and the lowest problem section for each student (except one section of test 4 must be kept), computing each student's average, and then computing a global average for all 45 students. With this final average, the final grade scale is 38.5 - 47.0 D 47.1 - 56.9 C (above 53.0 is C+) 57.0 - 68.3 B (below 59.6 is B-, above 65.8 is B+) 68.4 and up A (below 70.2 is A-, above 81.1 is A+) with below 38.5 as E. The final scale was selected so as to find gaps in the distribution. With the scale as given above the highest E is 32.4, the lowest D is 38.5, the highest D is 45.1, the lowest C is 47.2, the highest C is 54.8, the lowest B is 57.0, the highest B is 66.4, and the lowest A is 68.4. The smallest gap is 2.0 points between B and A. Grades were assigned strictly based on this scale.
