NOTE: In reporting the averages from the test we drop the lowest scores. This is because 25% (2 out of 8) of all scores will eventually be dropped. In comparing your average with the class average you need to compare with an average which is representative of the final average. Dropping the lowest scores before reporting the average is one way of ESTIMATING the effect of the final drops. These posted averages are not used in any way in calculating the final class average. The test average is computed by dropping the lowest MC section and the lowest problem section for each student (except one section of test 4 must be kept), computing each student's average, and then computing a global average for all 43 students. With this final average, the final grade scale is 39.1 - 47.3 D (no D's this year) 47.4 - 65.6 C (no C+'s this year) 65.7 - 80.3 B (no B-s this year, above 77.0 is B+) 80.4 and up A (below 82.8 is A-, above 92.6 is A+) with below 39.1 as E. The final scale was selected so as to find gaps in the distribution. With the scale as given above the highest E is 36.5, there are no D's, the lowest C is 47.4, the highest C is 63.0, the lowest B is 68.0, the highest B is 78.2, and the lowest A is 80.4. The smallest gap is 2.2 points between B and A. Grades were assigned strictly based on this scale.
