NOTE: In reporting the averages from the test we drop the lowest scores. This is because 25% (2 out of 8) of all scores will eventually be dropped. In comparing your average with the class average you need to compare with an average which is representative of the final average. Dropping the lowest scores before reporting the average is one way of ESTIMATING the effect of the final drops. These posted averages are not used in any way in calculating the final class average. GBA 1st Test 49 students took test 1 MC 45 students took test 1 Lecture Quiz Multiple Choice 33 students answered 5 or more questions correctly for those 33 the average was 8.00/12 (66.7%) Lecture Quiz 32 students earned 11 or more points for those 32 the average was 24.0/40 (60.0%) multiple choice grades lecture quiz grades 2nd test 49 students took test 2 MC 49 students took test 2 Lecture Quiz Multiple Choice 40 students answered 5 or more questions correctly for those 40 the average was 7.33/12 (61.0%) Lecture Quiz 38 students earned 15 or more points for those 38 the average was 23.8/40 (59.5%) multiple choice grades lecture quiz grades 3rd test 48 students took test 3 MC 48 students took test 3 Lecture Quiz Multiple Choice 33 students answered 5 or more questions correctly for those 33 the average was 7.45/12 (62.1%) Lecture Quiz 34 students earned 16 or more points for those 34 the average was 25.2/40 (63.0%) multiple choice grades lecture quiz grades 4th test 46 students took test 4 MC 46 students took test 4 Lecture Quiz Multiple Choice 35 students answered 4 or more questions correctly for those 35 the average was 7.00/12 (58.3%) Lecture Quiz 36 students earned 14 or more points for those 36 the average was 24.0/40 (60.0%) multiple choice grades lecture quiz grades Overall averages 46 students took three or more tests (including the fourth test) and had at least 520 WebAssign HW points for these 46 students the final TP average is 4.12 points (82.4% of 5 points) the final HW average is 6.63 points (82.9% of 8 points) the final quiz average is 5.24 points (74.9% of 7 points) the final test average is 45.41 points (56.76% of 80 points) the overall average is 61.4 points Note that the overall average includes all students who took three or more tests (including the fourth test) and who had at least 520 HW points. The test average is computed by dropping the lowest MC section and the lowest problem section for each student (except one section of test 4 must be kept), computing each student's average, and then computing a global average for all 46 students. With this final average, the final grade scale is 41.2 - 49.4 D 49.5 - 62.2 C (above 59.8 is C+) 62.3 - 78.0 B (below 65.2 is B-, above 74.5 is B+) 78.1 and up A (below 81.4 is A-, above 92.3 is A+) with below 41.2 as E. The final scale was selected so as to find gaps in the distribution. With the scale as given above the highest E is 38.1, the lowest D is 41.3, the highest D is 47.5, the lowest C is 49.6, the highest C is 60.2, the lowest B is 62.4, the highest B is 74.5, and the lowest A is 78.2. The smallest gap is 2.1 points between D and C. Grades were assigned strictly based on this scale.
