NOTE: In reporting the averages from the test we drop
the lowest scores. This is because 25% (2 out
of 8) of all scores will eventually be dropped.
In comparing your average with the class average
you need to compare with an average which is
representative of the final average. Dropping
the lowest scores before reporting the average
is one way of estimating the effect of the
       final drops. GBA

1st test

Overall averages

78 students took all four tests

           for these 78 students

the final HW average is 21.0 points (84.0% of 25)

the final test average is 53.8 points (71.7% of 75)

and the overall average is 74.8 points

Note that the overall average includes all students who took
four tests. The test average is computed by dropping the
two lowest test 'halves' for each student, computing each
student's average, and then computing a global average for
all 78 students. Since the overall average is below 75 there
is a (slight) curve. The final grade scale is

                     59.0 - 68.7 D
                     68.8 - 79.0 C
                     79.1 - 89.0 B

with below 59.0 as E and above 89.0 as A. The final scale was
selected so as to find gaps in the distribution. With the scale
as given above the highest E is 58.0, the lowest D is 60.2, the
the highest D is 67.5, the lowest C is 68.8, the highest C is
78.5, the lowest B is 80.4, the highest B is 87.6, and the lowest
A is 89.6. The smallest gap is 1.3 points. Grades were assigned
strictly based on this scale.

If you find a significant error the best time to see me is
between 10 and 11 AM Tuesday July 6. After that time any
change of grade requires a change of grade form. For
