NECROPOLIS BY NIGHT
CHAPTER 3
MODERN NECROPOLIS
|
Marauders discovered the disguised node of Necropolis in the mid-20th century, and made a concerted attempt to "purify" the Dreamspeaker ritual by flooding the Kansas River into the city on July 13th, 1951. Although the Industrial and Stockyard districts suffered heavy damage, the Marauder attempt failed. Hidden forces prevented them from dropping the city into the river - forces that apparently wanted to REMAIN hidden. However, the Marauder attack did succeed in weakening the Dreamspeakers' Mask. The node began resonating in the subconscious of many supernaturals, causing them to come to the city, and promising power to those who sought it. Though not sentient in itself, the node's power is capable of augmenting qualities already present in Necropolis, often giving the appearance that it is speaking to an individual's desires, when in reality the individual is simply hearing the echoes of his own mind. The weakening of the Mask caused Kindred to come to Necropolis in droves - between 1950 and the present, the city's population swelled from less than a score to better than 200, easily competing with Los Angeles for the title "Most Overcrowded." Sensing their grip eroding, the Ventrue finally decided to formalize their control over the city. The Directors met, and appointed Ashe Lea Hunter the first Prince of Necropolis, ostensibly making Necropolis a Camarilla city. Part of business is knowing when to cut one's losses, and the Ventrue quickly realized even the eminently competent Lady Hunter would be unable to staunch the bleeding, and Prince Ashe resigned under the auspices of "travel," leaving the city to Lady Valdara of the Toreador. Valdara, a closet Anarch sympathizer, disassembled the Primogen and requested a popular vote to confirm her legitimacy. It was held, and Valdara confirmed. Unfortunately, Valdara's Toreador blood quickly tired of the tenets of office, and she retired from the Princedom, conceding it to the Salubri Alcarne on the eve of his wedding to Sarahai. Alcarne departed on his honeymoon, leaving his Seneschal Nicademous as acting Prince. In Alcarne's absence, Nicademous began plotting his demise. The plan was uncovered by those loyal to the Prince, and Nicademous destroyed. Upon his return, Alcarne realized the pressures the Princedom would place on his wife and new marriage and resigned, unwilling to allow his family to become a target. He left the Princedom to Toreador, Maevyn MacTaggard, and following Valdara's precedent, an election was held to confirm her coronation. About the same time, Lady Sarah Isle, a Sabbat scout was elevated in status, first to Archbishop, then to Cardinal of the region. The Sabbat thought the quick attrition rate of the Princedom meant that no Prince had a firm hold over the government. They deemed it a perfect time to strike. Prince MacTaggard chose to negotiate for peace with the Cardinal rather than subject the city to a long and bloody war. The Sabbat took advantage of her peaceful nature to strengthen their standing in Necropolis. Cardinal Isle embraced an eight-year-old girl named Wendy, triggering the temper of a Brujah Archon to Petrodon, the Nosferatu Justicar who was in town with his cell investigating Setite-Anarch connections. The Brujah Archon challenged Isle to personal combat until one of them was forced into torpor. Some onlookers claimed the combat lasted less than five seconds, with the Archon landing only one punch. As per the terms of the |
combat, the Archon took custody of the Cardinal's staked body, taking her back to his cellmates for "reprogramming." The stresses of office took their toll on Prince MacTaggard, and she stepped down, naming Nicolas Eblis acting Prince until a successor could be named. Eblis was murdered by an unnamed Kindred in Horrid Form. Suspicion was that the murder was engineered by Maria, Ravnos of the Phuri Dae, and Lady Juliette Tepes-Isle, biological mother of Sarah Isle, who is suspected to have been the axe-man, having been returned to her mother in exchange for an unknown boon. Maria was subsequently killed in a car accident, so the truth may never be known. Eblis' Seneschal, Insomnia stepped into the void, becoming acting Prince. Among the nominees to the Prince's position was the same Brujah Archon who was so ired by the actions of former Cardinal of the Sabbat, Sarah Isle. It was he who took steps to reform the Primogen council, thereby restoring some form of Camarilla structure to the city. The Primogen unanimously declared this Brujah as Prince of Necropolis. He seemingly resigned his Archonship with Justicar Petrodon's approval and assumed the throne naming the Tremere, Maga Clare Altier, his Seneschal, to aid in the governance of the Domain. He began implementing a plan, developed by his coterie and his cell, designed to bring a mutual detente to Necropolis, and dubbed "the Casablanca Plan." The designers of the Plan had come to the realization that the Sabbat presence was too ingrained in the city to drive them out without sacrificing the city in the process. In the Plan, the Sabbat, Anarchs, and Camarilla would each control separate, sovereign Domains. The Anarchs would take Independence, Missouri; the Sabbat would take Necropolis, Kansas; and the Camarilla would continue control of Necropolis, Missouri. Sarah Isle's body was consumed as a Blood Feast at an Esbat to honor the arrival of the new Cardinal of the region, Isabella Valois. She quickly named Calida Conquetos Archbishop of the Sabbat Domain. With the divisions in place and all agreed upon, Necropolis was at peace. Cardinal Valois made the mistake of crossing Varna Brasov, a Sabbat Priest, by excluding her from a Vaulderie of Brasov's design. Brasov considered this a slight of her personal code of honor, and challenged Valois to Monomacy. By utilizing an archaic tactic that involves flesh crafting a human being into a shield and utilizing his spinal column as a handle, Brasov won the Monomacy and became Cardinal of the region. Conquetos, dismayed at the loss of her friend, took a leave of absence from the city. In her absence, Brasov named Adam D'Amour, Archbishop, to maintain balance with the Camarilla. He and the Brujah Prince find each other equal, worthy adversaries, and though both have won small, personal victories against the other since, neither shows any ability of being able to best the other in the long run. Brasov looked suspiciously on "peace" with the Camarilla, and tensions between sects ran high. Whether the Casablanca Plan will reach fruition, or whether the hidden forces behind Necropolis will maneuver the factions to destroy each other to protect its own secrecy, are questions that only the future will be able to answer. But one thing was for sure... the Camarilla had once again been brought back to prominence and power in Necropolis, MO - a foothold they were not about to give up. And they were not about to go "quietly into the night." |
