MTC 436/598 Assignment #1: Text Edit

Due date: Wednesday, September 2, 2009

Project Description:

Record a line of text on the ProTools system. Construct a new line of text by editing the original. Use the following as the original text:

I've really missed her since she's been gone.

Edit so that the resultant phrase is a slightly more optimistic:

She's really missed me since I've been gone.

OR, FOR THE SAKE OF GENDER FAIRNESS, YOU COULD INSTEAD CHOOSE:

I've really missed him since he's been gone.

Edit so that the resultant phrase is a slightly more optimistic:

He's really missed me since I've been gone.

Technical Requirements:

1. The original line of text must appear, unaltered and by itself, as the first track of your ProTools file.

2. The edited (new) line of text must appear as track 2 of the ProTools file.

3. Track 2 must visibly show every edit and fade. (Do NOT consolidate this track into a single element.)

NOTE: The most difficult aspect of this assignment is the creation of the word "me" which does not appear in the original of either text.

What to turn in:

Establish a folder under your name within the folder labled "ClassWork" on the desktop of the ProTools computer. Drag your "session" folder into this folder and label it "Assignment_1."

Grading:

Your grade will be based on your ability to accomplish the above technical requirements. The main issues that contribute to my evaluation of your work will be:

1. The original recorded at an optimum level with minimum transient sounds (pops, "s", "puh", etc.) in the recording process.

2. Clean, pop-free edits which minimize abrupt changes in the volume level of the word(s) and the surrounding noise floor.

3. Natural pacing of the text flow of the reconstructed version.

Late assignments will be downgraded a "-" value for each class period after the assignment is due.
