MTC 436/598 Assignment #2: Text Piece
Due date: Wednesday, September 12, 2007
Project Description:
Construct a 30' to 60' composition based soley on text utilizing only
ProTools. The source material for this piece should be text of your
choosing that you record (via mike) into ProTools and then manipulate.
Any of the ProTools Audio Suite tools can be employed in your work No other sources (synthesizer, other audio files, etc) are to be used.
Technical Requirements:
1. The original line of text must appear, unaltered and by itself, as the first track of your PT file.
2. At least one track of your session must be based on words extracted from the text (4 minimum). These may be repeated any number of times.
3. At least one track of your session must be based vowels/consonants extracted from the text (4 minimum) These may be repeated any number of times.
4. Sound location (in the stereo field) must be emphasized via at least
two instances of a gesture clearly moving from left to right (or vice versa).
What to turn in:
Place in a folder labeled "Assignment 2" within your class folder the following:
1. A graphic "score" showing the different layers in the work with a brief explanation of the work in relation to the technical requirements listed above.
Be very specific in indicating where you satisified each of the requirements. For example, you might circle a series of words which pans left to right and annotate it as "TechReq.#4: first pan" and so on.
2. The PT session of the resulting composition (with the original text as track 1). Note: I will assume that this text track is NOT part of the actual work unless you specify otherwise.
Grading:
The majority of your grade will be based on your ability to accomplish all of
the above technical requirements and the score/PT combination which you will
turn in. Those will guarantee you a grade of a "B" for the assignment. Garnering an "A" on this assignment will be based on your ability to be creative in your work and the degree that your work goes beyond the mere minimums of
the technical requirements. This can be accomplished with a 30" work.
Late assignments will be downgraded a "-" value for each class period after
the assignment is due.
