MTC 436 Assignment #5:
Absynth Sounds #1
Due date: Wednesday, October 28, 2009
SPECIFICATIONS:
Create three different sounds using simple synthesis techniques. For these sounds you are restricted to 1 Oscill module in "Single" or "Double" mode, 1 Filter module, and 1 LFO module.
1. Short "plucked string" sound. No vibrato. You must use a filter in this patch. A suggested starting point of the filter's envelope would be to have it follow the amplitude envelope. Like a true plucked string, there should be no sustain capability on the amplitude envelope. In addition, this patch should demonstrate a slight detuning of the oscil to
create a fatter sound. Remember: this can be accomplished by using the Double mode or
by the Uni function of the single oscil module.
2. A sustained sound with a fast attack. This sound must have a gradual and pronounced change in timbre over time (i.e. a slow filter sweep) in which the timbre gradually brightens to include more harmonic content and reverses back to a purer (less harmonic content) timbre. The sound must have a warm vibrato implemented by a LFO.
3. Keyed trill. This sound must emulate a keyed trill (a rapid alternation similar to playing a trill on the piano) of a whole step (two semitones). You must implement this effect with a LFO. Remember that Absynth's structure will require the transposition of this sound to retain the relationship between the played key and the true starting pitch. In addition the sound must slowly and continually pan back and forth (from L to R or vice versa)
as long as the key is depressed. You are free to select any amplitude shape (so long as it has a sustain element for the above pan) and filtering effect.
How to submit this assignment
As mentioned in class, you must create a blank Absynth bank, title it with your last name,
and place it in your class folder on the computer. All assignments must be placed into the patch slots from 112-127 in this bank. Your patches for the above assignment must be named A5-1, A5-2, and A5-3, corresponding to the three above sounds.
