Research Interests
I am interested in integrating the most current methods in measurement theory (construct representation) and psychometrics (Item response theory) with speech and language assessments for predominately Spanish-speaking and bilingual (Spanish/English) speaking children. Furthermore, I am also interested in the effects of English only versus native language supported instruction with English language learners on their academic achievement.

What am I currently researching?
Currently I am working on a number of projects: (a) the design of a screening measure to detect language disorders in predominately Spanish-speaking children; word learning in bilingual (Spanish/English) children with and without language disorders; and a measure of language proficiency for bilingual (English/Spanish) children.

Research Work
I work in the bilingual language lab with Dr. Laida Restrepo on two on going grants: VALE and VOLAR. Both grants investigate vocabulary intervention. VALE works with kindergartners and also investigates abstract language, while VOLAR works preschoolers with language disorders and also investigates oral language. For both grants my responsibilities have been: data collection, which entails going out to public schools to test predominately Spanish-speaking preschoolers and kindergartners with and without language disorders on a number of both standardized and experimental speech and language assessments; management of audio recording; transcription in both English and Spanish; database creation; data entry; and data analyses.
