Online ENG 201: World Literature (Classical to Renaissance):

The Question of Heroism

Short Response Paper #2

Due Tuesday, 7/27 by 8:00 p.m. AST ( Arizona Standard Time)

Submit via Blackboard’s Drop Box or as a Word document attached to email.

Paper Two Topics:

  1. Compare and contrast the heroic models as represented by Achilles and Beowulf. How are the two models similar? How do they differ? What hypothesis can you draw concerning the values of cultures represented?
  2. Wealhtheow, Hygd, Hildeburh, Grendel’s mother—what function do the women in Beowulf serve? How do they do it? Do they offer alternatives perspectives on the heroic world (so seemingly centered around male action) of the poem?
  3. The movie The 13th Warrior is based on Michael Crichton's book, Eaters of the Dead, which in turn draws heavily from Beowulf. Identify the major allusions (I would probably limit this to characters and events) and compare the treatment of those allusions with our text. How are they similar? How do they differ?

Formatting:

Responses should be 2-3 pages in length, using a 12-point font, 1” margins, and double spacing (in Microsoft Word). Follow MLA guidelines for citing.

Grades will be assigned based on:
