Audio Hardware

I started buying stereo equipment in junior high school with paper route money. I used to ride my bike to Pacific Stereo and just spend hours drooling.

My current home system:

Receiver: Kenwood VR4080
DVD/DVD-A: JVC XV-SA75GD
SVHS: JVC HR-S7800
CD: Sony
Tape: Onkyo
Main Speakers: BIC DV-736
Center Speaker: BIC DV-62CLR
Surround Speakers: BIC/RtR 43-2

This is a great budget system (IMHO). I bought the receiver and speakers through Ubid (before they changed to reserve auctions, BOO!) and got some great deals. I only paid $19 +sh for the main speakers! I have had my share of trouble with Ubid, but if you are careful and damn persistent, you can do pretty good.

In the car (2000 Ford Focus)

Head Unit: Pioneer DEH-P7400MP (CD/MP3)
Speakers: Kenwood eXcelon KFC-X688C 6"x8"
Sub: single Elemental Designs e12k (12inch SVC 4ohm Sub)
Box: SubZone H112-S180 (sealed 1.8cf)
Amplifier (Sub): U.S. Acoustics USX 600D (200 watts rms mono)

I really love the Pioneer head unit. It has some basic sound shaping tools and the fact that it plays MP3s is a big bonus. I have been ripping and burning my CDs on my computer. The advantage is that you can have about 10 full albums in high quality on one disk. With the CD text reading capabilities the Pioneer has, you can read the album, artist and song title on the display.

The sub installation was a labor of love. These Foci have the worst carpet to work with, and the driver's seat has some blades (to raise the seat) that limit your installation. When it was all said and done, I think this is a great sound quality setup. The bass is tight and quick not fat and bloated. If you are looking for a sub, I would highly recommend emailing Ben over at EDesigns. He was very helpful (he must of answered 20 or so emails) and an all around great guy. I bought the amp off ebay and the box from The Zeb.

I still have some Polk 6.5 component speakers (from ebay) I am going to try and squeeze into the front doors and run with a U.S. Acoustics USX 2100. I wanted to go with a set of CDT HD62DT's, but I just couldn't pass up the sub $100 Polks. I have an old set of Polks in my truck that I like, so I thought it would be a safe budget move. It has just gotten so hot here in AZ that the prospect of working outside all day isn't attractive.
