John Gullett, youngest son of Joshua Gullett, Sr. and
Elizabeth Barnes was born about 1796. He was born in Guilford County North
Carolina and two of his brothers were William and Joshua Jr. About 1808
William and Joshua came to Indiana on horseback and went back to North
Carolina to get family members. John first settled in Lawrence Co., Indiana
and then moved to Washington Co. where he started a ferry service. The
area, located where the Muscatatuck and White Rivers meet became known
as Gullett’s Ferry. John died October or November
1829.
Andrew Alexander Gullett, son of John was born September 19, 1822 in North Carolina. His mother died in childbirth and after settling in Indiana his father married Cynthiana Housh. He continued the ferry service and took escaped slaves across the river. Andrew married Margaret M. (Peggy) Burnett, born March 8, 1827, died May 14, 1864. She’s buried in Collette Cemetery, Monroe Township, Washington County, Indiana. They had four children: John See, b. January 1846; Andrew Newton, b. December 30, 1850; Daniel B, B. December 27, 1852 and Sarah Evaline, born May 14, 1858.
After Peggy died Andrew married Elizabeth Persinger, (born March 6, 1846, in Missouri) on June 28, 1883. They had one child, Elizabeth. Andrew died February 22, 1900 and is buried in Collette’s Cemetery next to his first wife Margaret.
Andrew Newton Gullett, 2nd son of Andrew and Peggy, married Lucinda Fields on June 4, 1872. Andrew continued the ferry service until 1905. Like his father and grandfather he played the fiddle. The following children were born to them, including 2 sets of twins: Ida E., b. 1872; Martha E. (Mattie), born 1873; Hettie Catherine, b. August 16, 1875; John L., b. 1878; Nora Belle, born 1882; Mary Louella, born 1882; Andrew, born January 18, 1884; Harvey, born January 18, 1884 and Daniel Curtis (my grandfather) born October 1890. Andrew died February 3, 1926. He’s buried in Jackson Cemetery in Washington County, Indiana.
