Captain John Smith, born in 1698 in England, settled with his parents in Province of Ulster, Ireland. He was an officer of the British army and married in 1719 Margaret___; immigrated to America about 1730 with his wife and children; first in Chester County, Pa about 1740, moved with the McDowells and others to what is now Augusta Co. Va, then Orange. He lived until the Revolutionary War began and he was greatly distressed when he was refused because of his advanced age. He was 78. He died sortly after this at Smithlands, the residence of his son Daniel, two miles north of Harrisonburg, Va.

He and his wife Margaret had the following children:

Daniel Smith came to America with his parents and married Jane Harrison, about 1751. Jane was born in 1735, died 1796, and was the daughter of Daniel Harrison and Margaret Cravens. Daniel Harrison was the son of Thomas and Jane Delahage Harrison of Augusta County. On March 10, 1751 Daniel purchased a tract of land on the head of Linsville Creek, adjoining the land of his father-in-law where he built his residence, later known as "Smithland". It was the first brick house built in the valley. He and Jane had 12 children:

John Smith married Margaret Davis in 1776 and had two children:

Daniel, studied law and lived in Harrisonburg. He married Frances Strother Duff (b. 2/11/1792, d. 10/4/1849) in 1809 and had seven children:

Elizabeth Strother, b. 3/16/1814 m.Judge Christopher Columbus Scott

Lucius Quintus Smith, b. 1816, d. 1847

Frances Evelyn Smith married Andrew Plunkett Beirne, July 2, 1839. They had two children:

Mary Frances, b. 6/15/1840 married John Marshall Kinney

Andrew Plunkett Jr., b. 4/6/1842 married Elizabeth Caperton. Andrew was a naval cadet at Annapolis and joined the Confereate Navy in 1861. He was captured at Mobile in 1865.[See Beirne page for Children]
