PUBLIC FIELD TRIPS 2001
GEOLOGY DEPARTMENT,  ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY

11th YEAR

The ASU Geology Department is pleased to offer 2 field trips as part of its public outreach program.  We welcome participation by alumni, friends, teachers, students, and members of the general public. The trips are an effort to share what excites us; they are not “fund-raisers.”  Please don’t hesitate to join us! ASU Geology Professor Paul Knauth will lead the excursions again.

                                                   SUPERSTITION MOUNTAINS DAY TRIP

 Saturday, December 16, 2000.   Cost: $45

Assemble for coffee, juice, and pastry at 7:30-8:00 a.m. at the ASU stadium parking lot.  The excursion involves 4 geology stops with hiking at each. While not strenuous, the hikes are non-trivial and involve several miles of cross-country travel. The focus is on the volcanic activity that created and shaped the Superstitions.  The excursion ends at the east end of the volcanic complex about 4:30 p.m. Return to ASU by 6:00 p.m. or join the trip leaders for a no-host dinner at the Mining Camp Restaurant and return by 8:00 p.m.  The $45 non-refundable fee includes a great lunch from Chef Darla, snacks, and transportation. Bring your Santa cap; this one is a holiday celebration.

                         RAFT TRIP THROUGH GRAND CANYON

May 9-17, 2001   Cost $1686

This is our annual 7½ day geology-oriented raft trip through the Grand Canyon from Lees Ferry to Whitmore Wash. We will examine side canyons, geologic features, and fossils not normally viewed by commercial river trips.  There will be an all-day, pre-trip geology excursion to Glen Canyon Dam, Lake Powell, and the Lees Ferry Area on May 9 for those willing to arrive a day early.  We travel with Hatch River Expeditions on large, motorized, inflatable rafts for maximum safety. Participants will rendezvous at the large Hatch facility at the Vermillion Cliffs no later than the evening of May 9 and will return there via aircraft on May 17.  Price includes 1 pre-trip orientation at ASU, the pre-launch Lake Powell excursion, a waterproof guidebook, geologic handouts, all meals while on the river, minimum tip for the boatmen, helicopter exit to Diamond Bar Ranch, plane flight back to the Vermillion cliffs, and a post-trip party/slide show.   We are pleased to be able to offer a geologic adventure of this type at a price below the commercial rate. The trip is limited to 36 participants. A $100/person non-refundable deposit secures your place.  Final payment is due March 5, 2001; we encourage cancellation insurance.
