"Plagiarism" is a word which teachers use but many students claim not to
understand. How complicated is this issue and what standard should
one use? Is it a matter of degree? a matter of intention?
What is a student of history supposed to do (especially when writing a
paper for History 498)? The issue has considerable relevance today
with accusations that two well-known historians commited plagiarism in
