Lois Lowry was born March 20, 1936 in Honolulu Hawaii. Her dad was an Army dentist and the family lived all over the world as she was growing up. She attended Brown University, but decided to leave her sophomore year in order to start a family. She had four children and the family settled in Maine, where she chose to go back to college and get her degree. She began writing in the mid 1970s-which was a childhood dream. She is now divorced and lives in West Cambridge with her dog, Bandit. She has written many award winning books including Number the Stars, A Summer to Die, and The Giver.
