What Is Drug Rehab?
Drug addiction, or dependency, is a pernicious illness that creates within some people an uncontrollable desire to continue taking drugs. Occasionally a drug addiction can arise through taking prescription drugs to treat a particular medical condition, however, whilst the term drug addict is most often applied to someone dependant on what are generally termed illegal or street drugs, it could also be applied to someone dependent on things like alcohol or tobacco too. For the vast majority of drug addicts to break the cycle of drug dependency requires a period of rehabilitation - so what is drug rehab?
Drug rehab
Drug rehab is the term commonly used for the process of treating drug addicts to rid them of their drug dependency. Such treatments can be medical or involve psychotherapy and frequently use a combination of both those things. As drug addiction can be so debilitating to the person concerned, as well as their family and friends, the ultimate aim of drug rehab is to help the person dependent on drugs to be able to live a life free of the psychological and physical consequences of their addiction, not to mention the financial, social and legal ones. Drug addiction is invariably a chronic condition that the addict cannot cure themselves of by abstaining from using the drug(s) for a short period of time. Consequently drug rehab has to be seen as a long term program and may possibly even involve a lifetime of monitoring and support.
Drug addiction as a psychological dependence
A drug addict could be defined as someone who takes drugs to satisfy a personal urge rather than to treat a medical condition. Such personal urges form a psychological dependence on the drug(s) in question and so, to begin with, finding the root cause of that psychological dependency is often the first step in a drug addiction treatment program. Quite often breaking that psychological dependency can also go hand-in-hand with breaking all of the patients associations with their drug taking past; which is why drug rehab programs are often conducted in a residential setting, away from any stresses that might have been the cause of the addiction and other people or places that the addict associates with their addiction. Then the drug rehab program can then start to work on addressing exactly why they have their drug addiction.
Drug rehab treatment
Before reading further it is important to note that drug addiction is a complex condition and, although there are many established drug rehab programs, sometimes the drug addict needs an entirely personalized approach to their drug addiction rehabilitation. So, bearing that in mind, when looking for drug rehab specialists on the internet do satisfy yourself that the clinic/establishment offering the drug rehab will be able to offer a flexible approach to their drug rehab treatment programs. Depending on the drug(s) that the patient is addicted to a course of medication might also be prescribed to work in tandem with the psychotherapy. Using medication to help with drug rehab can, in the early stages, be especially helpful if a period of detoxification is required to rid the drug addict’s body of an accumulation of drugs such as alcohol, tobacco or opiates etc. Medication to treat drug addiction is only really a short-term solution to ease the patient through a period of physical withdrawal. Thereafter, to deal with the psychological aspects of drug addiction and to be effective, the drug rehab program will be dealing with a body that is no longer physically dependent on the drug(s) in question.
Behavioral drug treatment programs
The long term success of a drug treatment program, whatever the drug in question is, requires the patient to become personally involved in their recovery, so that their attitude toward their addiction and their future behavior can be modified. Such treatments are collectively known as behavioral treatments that, in effect, teach the addict how to adopt a healthier lifestyle. These behavioral treatments can also be seen as a form counseling which can be undertaken as a group or individual activity. Following a period of treatment for the drug addict many drug rehab centers will also offer drug counseling to the family and friends of the rehabilitated addict. This can be important as having attended a drug rehab treatment program - a question that arises is how can the person’s drug abuse treatment and recovery be best helped? One simple answer to that question is by the continuing and informed support of those closest and most important to the reformed addict.
