This online course is designed to
familiarize Masters and PhD level students with descriptive and introductory
inferential statistics often utilized in educational and psychological research.
Students will learn to select appropriate statistical procedures, calculate
statistics, and perform statistical tests both by hand and with SPSS
(statistical software package). In addition to calculations, students will
learn to interpret the results of statistical tests in terms of the
experimental design and hypotheses. Topics include:

*Note, it is assumed that students have basic skills with high school level algebra such that they can isolate and solve for a single variable in an equation.
Content Delivery and Course Materials
1. Video Delivery of Course Content
All course content is delivered via video, web links, PowerPoint presentations, and electronic documents, with the exception of online office hours held at various times of the week with faculty and teaching assistants. The only scheduled requirements with required dates are online assessments for which students must log at some point with in a pre-specified set of days to complete a graded task. Students may generally proceed at their own pace between assessments, though some deadlines for exams are enforced to keep student "on pace" to learn the material.
The "class meetings" consist of 12 video sessions with synchronized PowerPoint presentations. Videos were created from classes in a traditional face-to-face offering of EDP/COE 502, and thus includes all of the materials (e.g., lecture, practice exercises, etc) that the regular course would require. This is the primary source of the course content. You should be sure that you have enough time to devote to AT LEAST watching as much video as you would have spent in class. The benefit, of course is that you can do this at your convenience, rather than at a set class time.
Video Sessions 1 – 12 are 3 hour each. There are practice exercises associated with each session, which you can spend as much or as little time on as you would like, depending on how well you understand the information. Links to all of these sessions and brief descriptions regarding their content will be posted at the start of the semester on the myASUCourses site.
2. Hardware and Software Requirements
Two primary web-based applications are used to deliver the course content: 1) Blackboard myASU and 2) an Interactive Classroom Environment. In order to have access to these applications, students should have access to computers with at least the following processing capabilities - high speed internet access, Microsoft word, Microsoft Powerpoint, Internet Explorer, Macromedia Flash Player (downloadable free). Links will be provided to download several free programs for the course. Once enrolled in the course, students will be sent an introductory email detailing how to access all materials.
In addition to these "course delivery" programs, students must have access to a data analysis software package called SPSS. SPSS 15.0 is the most up-to-date version of the software currently available. However, all class demonstrations will utilize SPSS 12.0. The differences are minor and will not affect proper completion of the course requirements. The following are options for access to SPSS:
3. Textbooks, Overheads, Handouts, Exercises, and other course materials
There are no required textbooks for the course. If you feel that it would be more helpful to have a textbook, I recommend the following books that I usually assign to students in my courses:

Statistical Reasoning in Education.
Green, S. B., & Salkind, N. J. (2000). Using SPSS for Windows and
Macintosh: Analyzing and Understanding Data (4th ed.).
Please note that the recommended Coladarci textbook comes with a 13-month student version of SPSS and costs around $80. I HIGHLY recommend purchasing this book both for the content and for easy access to SPSS.
To help students learn material, extensive course materials have been developed and integrated with the video presentations of the course material. Downloadable/printable versions of all of these materials will be available on the myASU and Interactive Classroom Environment course websites. The PowerPoint overheads will also be displayed alongside the video lecture and can be synchronized with the audio-visual. Additionally, it is often useful to have these printed out prior to watching the associated video if you like to take notes. The in-class problems will be introduced in the lecture, at which point you can stop and try to solve them yourself. You can then resume the video to hear and watch the solutions to the problems. The practice problems are provided for additional exposure to the concepts, and as examples of likely exam questions. Each week, the lecture begins with a review of questions on selected problems from the previous lesson’s problem set. It is therefore useful for you to complete each lesson’s problem set prior to watching the next video. It is not required that you complete these problem sets, but they are quite similar to what you will see on the quizzes and exams.
All quizzes and exams will be completed online at the Blackboard myASU course website. A time limit of 3-hours is placed on each quiz and exam.
1. Quizzes.
Ten quizzes will be posted on the myASUCourses site to be completed throughout
the summer session. These quizzes can be taken by the students at any time.
Students will only be given 1 attempt to complete each quiz. It is therefore
recommended that students watch the appropriate video and complete the
associated exercises with a given topic PRIOR TO attempting a
quiz.
2. Exams.
Students are required to complete four graded online exams. Exams 1 and 3 will
require students to analyze and report statistical analysis using the SPSS
statistical software package. Exams 2 and 4 consist of conceptual questions and
hand calculations. The exams are not "cumulative", per se. However,
the material covered on earlier exams is necessary to understand the material
covered on the final exam. The format of these exams will include multiple
choice, matching, fill in the blank, and constructed response problem solving.
In order to keep students "on pace" students must complete each exam
by a specified date.
Unlike quizzes, there are some constraints are placed on WHEN students can take exams. Students will only be given 1 attempt to complete each exam. It is therefore recommended that students watch the appropriate videos and complete the associated exercises with a given topic PRIOR TO attempting each exam.

These assessments can only be accessed and submitted only once by each student. In other words, you cannot log in to complete an assessment, then leave the assessment, and then return several hours later to complete it. Students can utilize any legitimate resources for completing the problems, including textbooks, lecture notes, problem and solution sets, etc. Other students in the class, tutors, or instructors are not legitimate resources to be used for assistance during the assessments. Scores for all assessments will then be posted online.

Students not currently registered at ASU must complete a brief online application for non degree seeking students located at http://www.asu.edu/graduate/admissions/nondegree.html . There is a $50 fee for the application processing which is completed in approximately 3-business days. The only requirement for admission is completion of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. Once admitted students can register in one of two ways:
1) ASUOnline
Once students have received an ASUrite name and password, they can enroll in any online summer courses at http://asuonline.asu.edu/ . The ASUrite name and password will be provided in the admissions acceptance letter to the student.
2) Sun Dial
Once students have received their 9-digit ASU ID number in an admissions acknowledgment or letter they can register via ASU’s SunDial registration system at (480)350-1500. Information on procedures for SunDial can be found at http://www.asu.edu/registrar/registration/intouch.html . Enrollment via Sundial will require a PIN, which is a 4-digit number consisting of the student’s month and day of birth.
**Waiver of Immunization Requirement**
Generally,
out of state students are required to show proof of vaccination and
immunization in order to enroll at ASU for summer sessions. However, given that
