Interchangeable Parts
Interchangeable Parts was written at the suggestion of the conductor Robert Black. I wanted to write an exciting and powerful overture for orchestra. Each instrument was to have its opportunity to shine. The title refers to the basic construction of the work. Several distinct large block sections of varying proportions can easily be identified. These larger parts return throughout the work, and are traded in an ever-changing kaleidoscope of ideas. The large sections are composed of several short musical ideas that function as either primary or secondary themes. These distinct motives are juxtaposed one on top of the other in various combinations. Their role as principal or subordinate theme is constantly changing. At times, themes can be heard in canon with itself, in essence acting as both theme and countertheme. Hence, the smaller components also comprise these flexible, interchangeable parts. The entire effect is like a whirling, frantic mechanism, at times calmly purring through its processes, and then nearly running out of control.
