Passion Strings
Passion Strings was composed in the summer of 1996 for Tom Flaherty and Cindy Fogg. I began the piece as a series of experiments with string timbres, but soon emotion and fantasy took over. I imagined the interplay of the two instuments to represent the various aspects of an intimate relationship. Although I was writing for a husband and wife, in my dream I, a former violist, performed with my wife. We experience stormy disagreements and intensely passionate moments which we express solely through our instruments. We sometimes perform together as one, in agreement, or as equal but independent entities. We can even perform alone for short periods, but in the end, there is always that reassuring, blissful quiet of once again coming together.
