• Modify solubility to dissolve minerals and ores, to precipitate ions from solution, to separate and purify ions.

• Examples:

  • remove hardness from water by adding Na2CO3
  • remove Ag+ from water by adding Cl- to recover Ag
  • dissolve Cu(OH)2.CuCO3 to mine Cu
  • separate the rare earth ions
  • separate U4+ from Th4+
  • separate the halide ions
