Biotechnologies
In collaboration with other ethicists and
philosophers, as well as with scientists, members of our group work on
conceptual and ethical issues in biotechnology, broadly construed. Three
examples of this work are:
-
JSR is
preparing a monograph on the creation of part-human 'chimeras'
in stem cell biology, and part-human 'cyborgs' in neurobiology. He
is especially interested in the social,
cultural, and scientific meanings of creating new part-human life.
-
Recently, working with PhD student
Dwayne Kirk, JSR has attended to aspects of research ethics and
commercial development in relation to plant-made
vaccines. Click
here for one of our papers.
-
Our latest project, in conjunction
with the Consortium for Science,
Policy, and Outcomes, is the Human Biotechnology Scenarios Project,
coordinated by Jenny Brian. Scenarios are widely used in the
field of technological forecasting to identify and assess
determinants of particular trajectories of science and technology.
We are preparing a suite of exploratory scenarios for use in
political and normative assessments of tomorrow's possibilities
today.
