Stem cells and embryos

Our group works on conceptual, historical, and ethical dimensions of embryo research, stem cell biology, and regenerative medicine.

Some of the questions we pursue are:

  • how has embryo research developed over time in its complex social and scientific contexts?

  • what are the twists and turns from bench to clinic for stem cell research?

  • what are the inferential and evidentiary criteria for moving between experimental systems?

  • how can we help to ensure that stem cell therapeutics do not suffer the same fate as gene therapy (lots of hype, much less hope)?

  • how, if at all, should eventual stem cell therapeutics be integrated into clinical medicine? and

  • how should embryo and stem cell research be governed?
