Hi all,

Here is an example of how the library's great new chat service (access from main library website) works. Please read messages from the bottom up . . . Also see Ramage pg. 640, for an explanation of the citation form.

Tompkins, Jane. "Indians": Textualism, Morality, And The Problem Of History." Critical Inquiry. 13.1 (1986): 101-119.

Judith: Thanks for the tip. This is a great service!!

Joe: I had a hunch when you cited a well-known English journal that "MLA International Bibliography" was the best place to go, but if I did not where the journal was indexed I would have consulted "Ulrich's Periodical Directory" - which ASU provides in web-access.

Joe: You then should select "Indexes and Research Tools" - http://www.asu.edu/lib/resources/indexabs.htm and I would then recommend the "Alphabetical List" - http://www.asu.edu/lib/resources/indexabs.htm

Joe: You will be directed to http://www.asu.edu/lib/resources/resources.htm

Joe: From the ASU Libraries Homepage [http://www.asu.edu/lib/], select the "Electronic Resources" link.

Judith: Many thanks!!

Joe: Yes, certainly. Let me give step-by-step instructions from the ASU Libraries Homepage.

Judith: Joe,
Thank you so much!! I did not know how to access Critical Inquiry from the online library data base. May I copy this exchange between us and use it in my class?

Joe: The publication in "Critical Inquiry" is 1986 Autumn; 13(1): 101-119.

Joe: You are right about "Critical Inquiry."

Joe: "Critical Inquiry" is indexed in the database "Modern Languages Association (MLA) International Bibliography" - so I am going to try that source.

Judith: Yes, that's where I got it, but I want to explain to my students that we need to find the original if possible.

Joe: There is a webpage that appears to include the full-text, but they are not specifying if they have copyright to legally repost the essay. http://omni.cc.purdue.edu/~sbenning/el102c/Indians_Essay/Indians.html

Judith: Hi,
Yes, thanks. I do need the original source. I did try the internet first.

Joe: Let's try, however, to track down the original publication - probably in "Critical Inquiry."

Joe: OK. One of the easiest ways to try to track down a citation is the google search engine. I have found a list of where the article has been republished...

Judith: I think it was published in "Critical Inquiry" sometime in the last ten years.

Joe: Hi. Yes, I will try to assist you with this. Do you know the approximate date of publication?

Joe: Welcome to the Ask a Librarian Chat Reference service @ ASU Libraries. I'm looking at your question right now; it will be just a moment.

[Joe, a library staff member, is coming online...please wait.]

A librarian will assist you momentarily. Please wait . . .

Judith: I'm looking for the original source for Jane Tompkin's article, "Indians":Textualism, Morality, and the Problem of History. Can you give me the steps you go through to find the source?
