Hi, Some folks asked me to clarify some issues in regards the evaluation paper and I'm happy to do so. Please read to the end as there are criteria and examples for your evaluation paper:

The criteria for your evaluation paper:

Topics must be from the areas of: Ecology, Environment, Land Use Planning

1) It must be at least 3-4 pages long. 2) Use MLA style 3) Your paper must refer to 3 valid, reliable sources. (Each source 4-5 pages long and must be included with your paper). 4) Describe/define the issue clearly. 5) Use comparisons effectively 6) give both sides of the issue/ multiple views.7) Give a judgement about the state/condition of your topic based on valid criteria. (Criteria are what you judge the state of your issue by).

For example, Terrence Rafferty in the review of "Devil in the Blue Dress" (SM 294), used certain main criteria for judging the worth of the film. Some of his criteria were: film direction, acting, cinematography, and screenplay. He is using artistic criteria to judge the film. He compared it to other films of the genre, and claimed it was a good film.

He was not judging the film by economic standards, how much money it grossed, therefore the money the film made was not one of his criteria, nor would it have been a valid criteria for this type of(artistic) review.

As an example, say I was judging the state of soneone's (I'll call him Sam) physical health:

How's he doin'? I think I'll check his vital signs, e.g. temperature.,pulse, blood pressure. Then I'd better look at him and see if he looks healthy. Eh, bright eyes (but not too bright) he's alert, he ate a good dinner. He's getting up to go the the bathroom, looks like his bodily functions are okay. I think I'll ask him how he feel's. He say's he's never felt better--no pains.

Okay, now I'm going to record my research notes:

Valid Criteria for judging Sam's health.

vital signs, appearance, bodily functions, and Sam's own testimony that he's feeling great.

Invalid Criteria: how much money he has, the color of his shirt, what the media says/does not say about him. _______________________________________________________________________________

Your Introduction then your claim + reasons

Sam Jones, on examination, appears to be a healthy guy because his vital signs are normal for his age, his appearance offers no indication of abnormality or illness, his bodily funcitons are regular and normal, and Sam testifies that he feels great.

Your Claim: Sam Jones appears healthy. Your reasons: normal vital signs, good appearance, normal bodily functions, and he says he feels great. _____________________________________________________________________________ In the body of the paper you discuss your criteria and give evidence based on your criteria. Here is an example discussion of the first criteria:

1) Sam's vital signs are normal for a man his age. (general statement)

2) His temperature is 98.7, blood pressure is 70/125 (proof)

3) In a survery of 25 men his age completed by Dr.'s Famous and More Famous at the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale AZ, Sam's vital statistics were exactly average even given variations in temperature over a period of 30 days. (further proof in the form of data and stats)

4) These facts clearly illustrate that not only is Sam healthy, Sam was the healthiest man among the 25 men studied by Dr's Famous and Famous. (concluding remark adding some further proof or facts)

5) Sam is really quite a speciman. He not only presents a unique example of healthy vital signs, but he is also a gorgeous looking person, so healthy he almost glows. (Number 5 is a silly example of a transition statement to lead you to the next point you discuss, Sam's appearance)

So, in brief form this is the method for discussing each of your criteria. I would also discuss how Sam's health compares to others of his age, etc. and in fact to persuade you he was healthy I might further compare him to one of the 25 men in the study.

Please let me know how I can help,

for now, jvan
