To: JUDITH C CLAYTON <jvan@asu.edu>Subject: evaluative essay and "grade"

Ms. Clayton Van - I apologize profusely for my outburst in class. It was unwarranted and excessive; the result of a fit of pique. However, you graded me on my first draft, not my final draft. All of the complaints you made in grading my first draft were rectified by the final draft. Furthermore, you commented that I was missing a works cited page and did not include my articles. These were all included at the end of the final draft. You comment that I was missing both an evaluative claim and criteria. In my final draft my criteria appears as "The goal of all environmental regulation is to internalize...externalities"; "This...involves making the polluter financially responsible for the pollution he creates"; and, "pollution is derived from the production of a good which society wants and/or needs...it is necessary to make tradeoffs between the economy and the environment." The goal of my paper was to evaluate how well standard environmental regulations meet this criteria; which was illustated by my evaluative claim that "the types of regulatory devices the government utilizes and the level at which they are implemented have economic consequences." My final draft went a long way in evaluating these regulations and explaining their economic consequences. While I appreciate your efforts to grade these papers in a timely fashion, I would have preferred you graded my final draft, not in haste, and received my paper back later. Furthermore, I have already spent a disproportionate amount of time researching, writing, and rewriting my paper. I will not rewrite it again. It has been clear from the start that you and I disagree on the causes and effects of pollution and environmental regulation. It is not your right to dismiss my arguments on the grounds that you don't agree with them. While you haven't come out and said this, it is clear from my standpoint that had I written a paper of equal quality on the slaughtering of whales or the Exxon Valdez disaster you and I would not be where we are now. I would like to meet with you and discuss this in a rational manner. However, I know the quality of my paper and will take whatever means necessary to see that it receives the proper grade. Please contact me, you know my E-mail address
