Project Three Workshop

Please address the following questions about the draft(s) you are reading. The purpose of your response is to provide helpful feedback and constrictive criticism so that the writers of the drafts you read can strengthen their essays. At this point in the writing process, I'd like you to focus on higher order concerns such as conceptual issues and organization, rather than on more lower order concerns such as spelling, punctuation, and grammar. In addition, it might serve you well to use this handout as a guideline for your own draft.

  1. How has the writer shown the relationship(s) between their particular major/field of study and the larger discipline in which this is located? How might she further develop these comparisons? Name some of those relationships.

  2. How has the writer made use of and built upon her interview with a researcher in the field?

  3. How has the writer detailed the kinds of topics people in their discipline investigate? Name some of these topics.

  4. In what ways has the writer identified the objects of study in her field? How has she shown these objects of study to be representative of research in her particular discipline?

  5. In what ways has the writer succeeded in demonstrating how researches in her field of discipline use databases, journals, and other types of research? How might she further develop this discussion?

  6. In what ways does the writer explore the interpretive conventions and stylistic conventions used in her field? How might the writer strengthen this section of the paper?

  7. In what ways does the writer explore the connections between the fields represented by these texts and other fields within the larger disciplines? How might this discussion be strengthened?

  8. How does the writer convince you that she is reasonably well informed about the field she's writing about?

  9. Is the writer successful in discussing at least one journal published in the field in terms of the type of publication this is; how people submit to the journal; whether it is peer reviewed; how often it comes out; who seems to be the audience; and the kinds of articles the journal publishes: book reviews, letters, and so on?

  10. What do you see as the strengths of this draft? What are its weaknesses?

  11. What suggestions do you have for the writer as she continues to develop her paper?
