Issues In-Class Exercise 1

What positions do you take on issues that currently contested in your communities? This exercise should help you articulate what you think about such issues.

a. Start with this question: what are the hotly contested issues in the communities you live in (the street, the barrio, your home town, the university, the reservation, the state, the nation?) Make a list of these issues.

b. Pick two or three issues and write out your positions on them. Write as fast as you can without stopping or worrying about grammar and spelling. At this point you are composing material for your use only--so don't worry about neatness or completeness or correctness; write to discover that you think about these issues. Write about each issue at least five minutes without stopping.
