Getting
Started
8
Open MS Word by double-clicking on the MS Word icon on your
desktop.
8
Open your document/paper in MS Word. That is, go to
the File Menu and click on Open.
Locate 31/2 floppy in the Look in section of the window, and
click on your document and open.
(If you did not develop the paper in MS Word, you may see
junk on your screen before or after the text
of your paper.
8
Delete this extra text/coding and get your paper into a readable
font for writing group members.)
How
to Begin
8Choose
File. Then click on Save as and save the document under
a different file name on your diskette.
(This ensures your draft will not be changed because the comments will be
on a different copy.)
8
Move to another writing group members computer or swap disks to annotate
and respond to each other's drafts.
Commenting
on a Draft
8
As you first read group members' drafts, make notes for yourself
about points you'd like to return to after you've
read the draft.
8
Once you have completed your first read through, you can then
return to the beginning of the draft and read through again, making comments
and asking questions on the draft as you go.
Preparing
to Respond
8
Under the view menu, locate the toolbars option.
8
Choose Reviewing option.
8
You'll see a new toolbar appear at the top of the document.
8
You will be using the various tools--inserting
comments, highlighting÷while working with the draft.
User
Information
8
To set up personal info as a reviewer: Go to Tools,
select Options
8
Choose the User Info tab.
8
Put your name, initials, and e-mail address into the appropriate
boxes.
Click on OK.
Making
Comments
8
Click on the little yellow Post-It icon on Reviewing and it
will call up the comments window.
8
Select the word/words or end of the sentence/paragraph you
wish to comment upon.
8
Type your comment and either leave the comments window open or close it
until you wish to add another comment.
8
The comments feature of MS Word allows you to make written comments throughout
another writer's paper
To End
a Session
8
Make sure you have Saved your comments and suggested revisions for
the writer.
8
Move back to your own computer and paper, or exchange disks again so that
they get their disk and you get yours.
I'll
show you how to Print the comments once we're near the end of the
class.
