Workshop #2 Paper #3

Writer's Name____________________________Respondent's Name__________________

You have two tasks as you read your peer's paper. First you must annotate the paper as you read through it. Next, you must answer the peer review questions to help your partner revise the paper. Please note that the criteria created in each question are the same criteria by which I will grade your paper.

Task One: Annotating the Paper
Read the draft all the way through, carefully. Then, go back and mark it up, annotating the text. That is, in the margins, respond to the text as a reader, mapping out what happens to you as you read. Of course, if the writer has chosen to develop a webpage or powerpoint presentation, you will need to make your responses on paper.

Task Two: Answering Peer Review Questions

  1. In what ways has the writer stated the issue? Please note your sense of the issue the writer is addressing.
  2. In what ways has the writer analyzed the appeals made by the image(s) and its corresponding written arguments?
  3. In what ways has the writer arrived at an understanding of (1) the argument of the visual representation of the issue, (2) the argument of the written representation of the issue, and (3) how these arguments relate to each other? Be specific.
  4. In what ways has the writer shown the ways in which the image and text succeed in communicating the argument to the reader ? Be specific.
  5. How has the writer moved beyond considering the words in a text-its linguistic content-and also observed how its visual elements, such as graphics, typography, color, and placement, contribute to meaning.
  6. How has the writer addressed the internal arrangement of the image as well as its relations with other elements on the page? Be specific.
  7. In what ways has the writer carefully and thoroughly considered the conjectures and values at stake?
  8. What is the aim or purpose of the paper?
  9. How did the writer establish his/her credibility and authority as a writer?
  10. In what ways has the writer provided responses to the following questions:
    • What is the rhetorical stance?
    • What are some of the techniques used to attract the viewer to the image?
    • How are conjectures represented in the image, and to what end?
    • How are values represented in the image, and to what end?
    • How are facts presented, and to what end?
