Grading & Other Expectations of Students

Grading. Your grade will be based on two tests (20 points each), three explorations (10 points each), three article writeups (10 points each) for a total of 100 points.  While four article writeups are assigned, we will count only your three best writeup grades (i.e., you may skip one, or you may drop your lowest grade).  The class will use +/- grades and may apply a minor curve to the final grades.

Be aware that the lectures complement the readings. Tests and many assignments are based heavily on material covered in class but not in the readings. Even if you carefully do all of the reading, you cannot expect to do well in this class if you do not attend class regularly.

Assignments. All assignments must be typed, double spaced although graphs, sketches, etc. may be done by hand. Paper copies of all assignemnts must be turned in; email assignments are not accepted. However, e-mail is a good way to communicate with us when you have brief questions. For your own protection, you should keep a copy of everything you hand in, and you should keep your graded assignments at least until grades are finalized at the end of the semester.

If you have personal problems that affect your performance in this class, please notify us as soon as possible. Incomplete grades will not be not granted except under truly extraordinary circumstances approved by the professor, (not the TA).

Late Assignments. In the absence of having a written excuse (approved in advance by the instructor, not after the assignment is due), the following policy applies to late assignments:  Excuses must be written, either on paper or email, and approval must be obtained, either by an email reply or by having the paper excuse signed. In order to get credit, with the late assignment you must turn in a copy of the email approval or signed written excuse. Writeups and explorations are due in class (or prior to class). Unexcused late write-ups will not be accepted.  Because each writeup counts 10%, each one you fail to turn in drops you course grade approximately one full letter grade (e.g., from a B- to a C-). Late explorations are accepted for reduced credit; assignments turned in after the class session in which they are due are dropped 1 point for each class meeting in which they are late (e.g., 10% for each Tuesday or Thursday).

Cheating and Plagiarism are unethical and represent serious violations that will be dealt with as harshly as University procedures permit. Cheating means presenting others work as your own. Plagiarism is using information and or original wording in your writing without giving proper credit to the source. If you follow an argument closely or quote a source directly, you must provide a citation to the publication, including the author, date and page number. If you directly quote a source, even in an assignment, you must use quotation marks and a page number citation for each quoted sentence or phrase.

You may work with other students on assignments, however, all writing that you turn in must be done independently.  If you have any doubt about whether the form of cooperation you contemplate is acceptable, ask the TA or the instructor in advance of turning in an assignment.

Student Standards: Students are required to read and act in accordance with university and Arizona Board of Regents policies, including:
