Open Letter to the Valley of the Sun

I decided to take this class because immigration is a current problem facing our country and I was curious what I would learn. I didn’t know the difference between an immigrant and a refugee! I assumed that both groups represented people that were here either legally or illegally. Nor was I aware of the physical and emotional struggles that immigrants and refugees endure in their pursuit to reach the United States. This class not only changed my awareness and perceptions about immigration, but influenced my attitudes as well.

We take for granted living in this great country. We are blessed with an abundance of resources, a government based on rule of law, and unlimited opportunities. Whether we succeed or fail in life is usually determined by our education, timing, luck, and hard work. As a nation we’re not perfect. But based on my travels I have yet to visit another country that I would choose to call home. Most of the people in the world are not as blessed. Life is a struggle for most of the world. If I were a Mexican and faced with the poverty that I witnessed in Nogales, I wouldn’t think twice about migrating to the U.S. Legally or illegally! The struggle for survival and providing your family is universal.

Some immigrants are "pulled" to America to pursue these opportunities and find a better way of life. Like Sead and Natasa, some are "pushed" here by wars or persecution in their native country. They are now citizens and are living the American dream!

In conclusion, I welcome all legal immigrants who believe in the American values of getting a good job, paying their taxes, educating their children, and being a productive member of society. We need your talents and skills. Welcome!
