Im/migrant Agency Report

In these brief reports, students respond to questions about the migration perspectives of an assigned im/migrant agency or organization, based on their Internet research. These annotations will compile a resource list to serve as a guide for the class and others concerned with im/migration issues.

A.    Title of agency or organization?

American Border Patrol

B.     Where is home base (city/state/country)?

Cochise County, Arizona

C.     Date founded?

In the articles I found the earliest it went back was February 3, 2003, but not founded date is indicated on the website.

D.    Names of key spokespersons/officers

Glenn Spencer is the person that is in charge of the operations.

E.     What/who is key constituency or audience?

It’s mainly for people that are against people coming to the United States illegally.

F.      What are the agency’s main activities?

The main activities they do are to monitor immigrants entering the country. This group would go to the border to hunt immigrants, sometimes with assault rifles,     treating them like animals. The people then hold them in custody until US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents take them away

G.    Mission statement? (you may quote mission statement if available; use quotation marks)

Our goal is to show the American people that the problem of illegal immigration can be resolved, and we know how to do it!”

H.    What are the key im/migration issues of concern to this agency?

The concern of the AMP is to stop people from crossing the border.  They will do anything to stop illegal immigrants to come to the United States. They receive donations from people that give them RV’s, all terrain vehicles, two-way radios all of it is tax-deductible. This organization has surveillance cameras installed, along the border and also use their own aircraft surveillance.

I.       What appears to be the most common informational basis for statements issued, press releases, reports, etc.?

J.       Any publications? (what types, sample titles; if online, give links)

There is an article that I found interesting because it writes that some people are getting upset that in their neighborhood there are people associate with the AMP. In which the homeowners association had to be involve. http://0web.lexisnexis.com.library.lib.asu.edu/universe/document?_m=ca0579ebc7df3d9a0c1ace94af068b92&_docnum=13&wchp=dGLbVzb-zSkVA&_md5=cf88e0a50160c3a183340c814b04a809

K.    Give at least one citation of this agency in a newspaper article (preferably an Arizona newspaper). Use a citation index to research this e.g., Lexis Nexis, available from the Migration Course Web Page made by the Fletcher Library:  http://library.west.asu.edu/subjects/SOC/soc331.html  Provide a quote from the article that gives a good idea of this agency’s perspective on im/migration.  Note: not a quote from agency’s own web site.

The American Border Patrol is a private group that patrols border areas but is not associated with law enforcement.
"We are being singled out because of who we are," Spencer said Wednesday.”

L.     Other issues of interest?

M.   Is the agency noticeably pro or con immigration? (you may need to determine this from readings its position papers, press releases, news reports, etc)

This organization is against immigration to the US.  Seems that this organization is causing many controversies because there have been lawsuits against it.

N.    Web site? Give URL

http://www.americanborderpatrol.com

Reminder: Do not simply copy the agency’s own words. Instead, give synopsis based on your research. If you have trouble locating information about your agency, contact Dr K for help!
