The Memorable Trip to
Mexico,Nogales
I went
to Mexico, Nogales with my classmate and what I learned there was
that people should appreciate what they have instead of misusing it.
I also learned that be happy with whatever amount of money you are
being paid for e.g. jobs. An example the guest speaker from Grupo
Beta Immigration Agency said most of the people that have been
caught running to be United State are bought to their attention and
they decide what to do with them. Either they get deported or
repretriated. We met several people in one family standing outside
the immigration office who told us how they are trying to go and
stay with their parents who already left Mexico and have gone to
Florida to start a new life so that they could support their
family. These ladies have been deported back to Mexico because they
got caught on their way across Arizona Border. Another thing they
told us is how they lived on the desert for four days and three
nights but had not eaten anything for four days. They survived on
helping each other and when they got caught by the Us Border patrol
they were taken to the Grupo Beta office where they had a snack that
was given to them by the worker of Grupo Beta. Here in the United
States, we have quite a bit of help in becoming adults. Our parents
teach us, and teachers teach us. When we fall down, there is someone
to help us back up, be it our loved ones or strangers. The people in
Mexico do not seem to have this same type of help when it comes to
making a better life and home for their children. I won’t say how
thankful I am for the things I have, it’s not a matter of luck, and
it’s just not fair. The men and women in Mexico deserve to have a
little help. When the adults go to work, they are gone all day. They
do this out of necessity, not necessarily because they enjoy it. I’m
sure that given the opportunity, a large number of people would
prefer to stay home. Another aspect about the trip that made me
think was the trip to the Maquiladora. The human resource manager
stated that they have more men working for them than women. This
aspect would not normally strike me as odd except for the fact that
I had just read the article in the Border Links packet entitled
We Are Not Machines: Corporations That Bring Jobs Must Bring Justice
Too by Maria Guadalupe Torres which states, “Usually, only women
are hired in the maquiladoras creating conflicts because the men
cannot find work.” The Human resource lady stated that right now,
they are even short-staffed. She then went on to inform us that
their employees work a forty-eight hour workweek and only get paid
about thirty dollars a week.
An excerpt in the Border Links packet entitled Two Countries, One
Population, Shared Problems Community Health In The Borderlands: An
Overview states, “It is true the Mexico’s border states, due
largely to employment generated by the maquiladora industry,
have
poverty rates lower than the national average.” Another thing I
learned from the trip was most people in small house that only
consist of bedroom and bathroom with a living.
When I went to eat
lunch in Sandra's house she said things that I never knew about
Mexico. She told me that most stay home and clean while their
husband works the entire time. She also said that she has four kids
that goes to school on foot and because the husband takes the car to
work.
