After reading all of the great experiences of the people in this class, I’m sure you are wondering how you can get involved in the lives of these citizens.  Below I have listed a sample of different organizations that help the people of South Phoenix.  For all of these organizations, bilingual and Spanish-speaking volunteers are greatly needed, but anyone can help!  See if something suits your fancy, then get out there and volunteer your time and talents!! 

 

All Star Kids Tutoring

ASKT specializes in one-on-one tutoring in reading for elementary school-aged children.  By volunteering just 2 hours a week, you will greatly influence the life of a child.

Communities in Schools of Arizona

This organization has a wide range of volunteer opportunities at a number of schools in the area.  Anything from tutoring & mentoring, to school supply or clothing drives, to assisting teachers in the classroom is needed to help this organization.

Habitat for Humanity

This organization provides affordable homes for individuals with lower incomes.  Volunteers donate all labor and supplies for building the homes.

Labor’s Community Service Agency

This organization centers around homeless individuals and families.  They provide transitional housing, clothing, and many other services for these individuals.  Home construction, apartment cleaning, and working with families are just a few of the services you can provide for this organization.

Literacy Volunteers of Maricopa

This organization’s programs include adult literacy and English as a second language.  Literacy Volunteers of Maricopa provide one-on-one tutoring, computer-based instruction, and family literacy programs.

Make A Difference

Make A Difference is a valley-wide organization that provides many different community service opportunities.

Sun Crest Health Care Center

Sun Crest is a long-term health care facility in South Phoenix.  Forty to fifty percent of the residents at Sun Crest are under the age of forty years old.  Sun Crest needs volunteers to help chaperone residents on field trips, read to patients, or just spend quality time with the residents.
