MY FAVORITE BEASTComputing Commons Room 226
Pod ArrangementStrengths
- aesthetically nice room, also quite glitzy
- high tech, up-to-date computers and demonstration capabilities (screen), proxima, VCR
- white boards close to the students, well lit
- pleasing temperature usually well kept
- rolling, plush chairs
- great location in ASU's Computing Commons--technical support
- pods allow for writing group work, although only three at a table
- extra space at a table for writing and groups to gather if theyâd like
Weaknesses
- high podium at front creates "sage on the stage" effect
- tall computer screens hide students, block their view, or allow them to hide
Solutions
Some problems similar to CC 107 but not as severe. Ask students to roll their chairs to the front or middle of the room. Make writing groups no larger than three people. Have students use the demonstration computer to de-center authority. Think of the computer writing classroom as individualized, self-paced instruction. Pair up writers.
This room has a more community-building atmosphere because of the smaller size and pod arrangement. Notice that there are three computers to a table with open space for students to work away from the computer.
