The North American Indigenous Peoples Caucus met to discuss a number of items including implementing the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. In September of 2007, The Northern Cheyenne Nation adopted this declaration before the United Nations along with a number of other resolutions to protect sacred sites and cultural properties of the Northern Cheyenne [link] [link]. Recommendations were made from the Northern Cheyenne to protect sacred sites and cultural properties on an international scale.
The Parliament of the World's Religions meets every five years. I was invited to screen my film, The Chiefs' Prophecy: Survival of the Northern Cheyenne Nation. I was also a member of the Indigenous Peoples Task Force, along with other spiritual leaders from various indigenous groups around the world. (Read more)
"Traditional Alliance Day Declared at Little Bighorn Commemoration," Indian Country Today, July 23, 2007. CROW AGENCY, Mont. - On June 25, 1876, the 7th Cavalry of the U.S. Army, under the command of Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer, was defeated by seven bands of the allied Cheyenne, Arapaho and Lakota nations. June 25 marked the 131st anniversary of what is known as the Battle of the Little Bighorn. "Sand Creek National Historic Site Dedicated," Indian Country Today, May 14, 2007. LA JUNTA, Colo. - Tribal leaders from the Northern Cheyenne, Southern Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes, along with the National Park Service and nearly 500 others, gathered April 28 to dedicate the Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Site. "Protecting Noavose," Indian Country Today, May 4 2007. Leaders from the Northern Cheyenne Tribe of Montana and the Southern Cheyenne Tribe of Oklahoma met in March to discuss and plan for the protection of Bear Butte, or Noavose. Noavose, the most sacred mountain to the Cheyenne, is facing encroaching development. (Read more) [photos]
