Successful graduates of Minority Writers
Seminar to be featured at 10th anniversary
Session; deadline to apply is March 19

Successful graduates of the Minority Writers Seminar
will be featured speakers at the 10th anniversary
session of the "hands-on" workshop April 28-May 1 in
Nashville.

"Since this seminar has been so successful, the
program this year will include a panel of participants
who have made the transition to opinion writing or
were new to the position when they attended the
workshop," said Vanessa Gallman, Seminar director.

One of the participants is Doug Lyons, who was a
senior reporter for the South Florida Sun-Sentinel in
Fort Lauderdale when he attended the seminar in 1997.
He joined the editorial board the next year and has
been an active volunteer at the seminar since 2000,
serving as a panelist and member of the faculty.

Lyons said the seminar definitely helped prepare him
for the job, adding that his attendance "also sent a
strong signal to my paper that I was serious about
making the move from reporting to opinion writing. I
think my participating made it easier for them too."

The deadline to apply for the 2005 seminar is March
19, said Gallman who is editorial page editor of the
Lexington Herald-Leader in Kentucky. Enrollment is
limited to  20 experienced minority journalists and
includes those who have been writing opinion less than
two years.

Sponsored by the National Conference of Editorial
Writers Foundation in partnership with the Freedom
Forum Diversity Institute  at Vanderbilt University,
the seminar provides an opportunity for experienced
minority journalists to explore the nuts-and-bolts of
the profession.

"It is just as valuable as 'basic training' for those
new to the profession," said Gallman.

Participants work closely with experienced opinion
writers by attending simulated editorial board
meetings and writing editorials  that are critiqued.

One of the highlights of the seminar is an interactive
presentation on "Getting Your Word's Worth," from Rick
Horowitz, a writing coach and syndicated columnist.

I would really encourage copy editors to apply for
this. It doesn't matter what size paper you're from
either. I was in last year's class and it was a great
experience. I represented the smallest paper (5,000
circulation) and I was with copy editors from Newsday,
the Oregonian, the KC Star, Wichita Eagle among
others. The sessions cover a good mix of subjects and
it's a great chance to meet fellow copy editors.
My class has stayed in touch with each other and
that's an added benefit.
