Website Help and Information

Adding Links to a page:

You have a couple of options. You can link to pictures or text. Of course, there are many other options, but these are the most basic.

Linking to pictures:

Insert your image, make sure that it is selected (see Properties below). Type (or cut & paste) your link into the link box. If the link goes to an outside site (not one of your pages), then type the entire address (for example-- http://www.asu.edu). If the link is to one of your files, then just type the name of the file (for example--index.html). The same holds true if you are using text for your link.

This will link you to my home page!

When using images, be sure to size or re-size them in Photoshop before inserting them into your website.

To insert an image, make sure that the image is saved on your M drive first; otherwise, it won't work. Then, you can click on "Insert" on the toolbar or click the picture in the Common toolbar.

Select image source box will appear, and your M drive should be available, so that you can find your www folder that contains your images. Select the image and enter.

Your picture should show up on the page, see above!

Inserting a table:

Determine how many rows and columns you will need, though these can be changed if you need to.

Click on the table icon or go into "Insert." Change the number of rows and columns to match your needs and click enter. You can change the size of the table as is necessary for your needs.

If you don't want the table border to be seen on the web, then select the table and change "Border" to zero (see Properties after you select the table). Or you can increase the border accordingly.

You can change the sizes of the cells of the table as you want. You can also insert pictures or other table into the table and/or the cells! Or change the background colors of each cell or the whole table. But don't get too carried away or it will look clownish!

Don't you just love my beach chair?

Preparing to Upload:

Be sure to check that your website is uploaded (if you made changes to it since the last time you uploaded it to the Internet, then it will need to be uploaded again!)

Make sure that all of your pictures are loaded and can be viewed.

Make sure that all of your links work and that you have navigation tools (i.e., a table of links, a home link, or something like that). REMEMBER: links that go outside of your web pages must begin with the http information!

For those of you who can't remember how to upload and/or didn't write down the information as I asked, here's another reminder:

Be sure to open your M drive before you create your site in Dreamweaver!

In Dreamweaver, go to "Site"(on the top of the page). Click on "Manage Sites" (also on the right hand side on the Files section). Click "New" and then "Site." When the Site Definition box appears, click "Next." On the next screen make sure that No to server technology is marked and click "Next." On the next screen, open the folder to find your M drive (make sure that it is opened first) and select your WWW folder. (When you go back to the screen, make sure that the box shows your M drive and WWW folder.) Click "Next." The next screen should show the Local/Network, click on the arrow to change to FTP.  In the Host box, type general.asu.edu

In the folder box, type /afs/asu.edu/users/first initial of your login name/second initial of your login name/third initial of your login name/your full login name/www

Then in the next box enter your login name, and in the next your password.  After that, check the Use Secure FTP box and then click "Test Connection." You should receive a message that says that you have successfully connected.  If not, then go back and check your information.  You may have missed a slash or a letter or spelled general wrong, something like that.  Keep looking.  If you absolutely cannot connect, then call me or get help from the computer people (as I am assuming--dangerously--that you are in a computer lab area.)  If you have connected, then you will see all of your files appear on the right hand side of the screen. Remember that you click the up and down arrows to "Put" your web files on the internet.  When you "Preview" (by clicking on the globe), remember to refresh your screen...you can save yourself from some headaches!

Okay, that should cover the basics!  If not, then you should probably call me or someone from class who could help you.
