Meta-search engines search other search engines on the web to locate sites found on each engine based on the search term(s) you entered . These are useful for gaining a broad overview of information on and sites devoted to a topic, and thus, offer a good starting point. Search engines gather URLs by sending out an automated program (called a "robot" or a "spider") that collects URLs of new web pages and indexes them by topic. A directory, by contrast, is created and maintained by individuals. URLs have to submitted, reviewed, and then organized by categories.
